Student Organizations

Students who would like to be engage in the department can become a Sociology Ambassador by registering for SOC 199: Leadership and Engagement.  This course includes weekly sessions to train in major/minor/departmental policies/resources as well as leadership development programming from university units. Leadership, communication, teamwork, mentoring and problem-solving skills will also acquired.  Students will serve one “office hour” per week in the advising office reception and will participate in departmental events to build skills and engage. To be eligible, student should successfully complete SOC 199: Career Development.

This student led organization helps create a home for our majors and promotes interest in sociology through activities such as speakers, presentations, and events related to professional development, community service, wellness, and inclusion.  

All majors are automatic members of SSO and can attend the activities offered to grow their professional network, become more involved in the department, and choose to take on leadership roles within the organization.

Alpha Kappa Delta membership is a earned honor for undergraduate, graduate and faculty in sociology who have a record of high academic achievement. Membership Fees are given to the Sociology Department main office: 3210 Lincoln Hall, 702 S. Wright Street Urbana, IL (Directions).  NOTE: Fees are to be turned into the Main departmental office NOT the academic advising office.
