Hello everyone! My name is India Lockhart, I am a senior majoring in Sociology with a double minor in Psychology and Criminology, Law, and Society. I recently became a research assistant and the journey so far has been demanding but amazing. It truly reminds me of why I chose this field of study in the first place.
I’m currently working as a research assistant under the Head of the Sociology Department and professor, Reuben May. I’m currently researching the relationship and linkages between individual and corporate businesses. This project requires a meticulous and tenacious work ethic for a concrete foundation. This is also the part that keeps me engrossed because it’s as if I’m building the essence from behind the scenes that allows me to visibly see the relationships between the businesses if any.
Likewise, what made me go into research was the fact that I’ve always wanted to go to graduate school to receive my Ph.D. However, I was unfamiliar with the process, but fortunately, Prof. May so kindly took me under his wing as my mentor and gifted me with a position as a research assistant for proper preparation and the ability to gain a plethora of fundamental skills before attending grad school.
So, if you’re thinking about going to graduate school, getting into research, etc… I highly recommend becoming a research assistant first or having a form of research training under your belt because it’s essentially a prelude to the work you will be doing. It will help you gauge if this field of study is something you’re willing to put the time end effort into or help you realize this is something you thought you wanted, but it’s not for you and that’s also okay. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or build relationships because they will benefit you in the long run.
